Habitat for Humanity: Join volunteers of various skill levels and future homeowners to build houses and lives. Habitat is a worldwide effort that gives families the opportunity to own their own homes through a combination of their “sweat equity” and the efforts of many volunteers. In January 2007, we helped build the 50th First Presbyterian-sponsored house in partnership with Trinity Habitat for Humanity! First Friends Camp: This group hosts a day camp twice a year for children from the Shelter and the inner-city. Join us on a Saturday in the Fall and/or Spring at Prairie Valley Presbyterian Camp to help youth and children explore Creation beyond the asphalt and concrete of the city. Volunteer as a shepherd for the children, or act as a leader or assistant for games, crafts, or other activities. Presbyterian Night Shelter Playgroups: Make a difference in the lives of the children living at the Presbyterian Night Shelter. Take part in a weekly playgroup to help them "just be kids" on the second or fourth Tuesday of each month; or, help start a group on the first or third Tuesday of each month. You can lead or assist with games, crafts, and other activities that create a highlight in the children's week. Market for Mission: Once a year, we help artisans from around the world receive a just wage and help families receive needed assistance locally and abroad by hosting Market for Mission, an alternative gifts market. Help plan the event, staff the “gift store” counter, or sell fairly traded coffee. Or, shop 'til you drop! Visit the Market and purchase hand-made crafts as Christmas gifts or make a donation to a local or global mission agency in honor of a loved one.
Urban GAPs (Gifts and Passions): Help provide evening meals for visiting youth groups from around the country who join us for an urban immersion work camp experience each summer. During the week, the youth volunteer with various ministries and agencies in our community and learn about issues related to poverty, hunger and health. The camp is designed Samaritan House Supper Clubs: Volunteer with a Supper Club team once a month preparing and serving a delicious, nutritious meal for approximately 60 residents of Samaritan House, a local housing program for individuals in need living with HIV/AIDS. Teams serve meals the first and third Tuesday, third Monday, and fifth Monday each month. Carpenters on Call: We need skilled and unskilled carpenters and other handy individuals to help build wheelchair ramps and modify homes for wheelchair-bound patients of Cook Children’s Hospital and others in the community. If you are willing to volunteer with any of these community mission and outreach efforts or for more information, please contact Aaron York, Outreach Coordinator. |
