The Congregational Care Committee coordinates First Presbyterian Church's ministries of care and compassion within our congregation. If you would find any of these ministries helpful to you, or would like to give of your time in extending them to others, please contact Carol Toombs in the church office.

Care Teams: Neighborhood Care Teams provide a chance for neighbors to get to know one another, and to respond in love to one another’s needs. Care Teams are created by zip code and meet in one another’s homes once a month for fellowship and to coordinate care of their neighbors who need assistance. This is most evident when a member, or their family member, is hospitalized, is chronically ill, or is bereaved. Care Teams provide meals, transportation, errand running, cards and visits, or whatever else might be needed. There are currently 10 Care Teams meeting regularly. Carol Toombs and Pat Gordon coordinate Care Team efforts.

Prayer Shawl Ministry: Care and the love of handwork have been combined into a prayerful ministry that reaches out to those in need of comfort and solace. Volunteers create knitted, crocheted, woven, or quilted shawls as they pray for the person who is to receive it. After a final blessing, the shawl is delivered to the recipient. Volunteers work from their homes and also meet in a sewing circle for fellowship and community prayer. To become involved, call Carol Toombs at the church office.

Sometimes it takes very little to brighten a day significantly, a card dropped in the mail, a bouquet of flowers, a box of muffins …and a few minutes of your time to say, “We are here and we care.”

Congregational Care supports three ministries that do just that. Lynda Hicks coordinates a Card Ministry in which volunteers write to all new members, confirmands, and parents of the newly baptized, welcoming them into our church family. Other volunteers maintain regular contact with our homebound members who now live out of the area and, therefore, cannot be visited. Mary Alice Harry coordinates a Flower Ministry to deliver flowers to members who are hospitalized or find themselves “shut-in” for a time. Every Sunday a volunteer arranges the flowers from the Sunday morning worship service into smaller bouquets and other volunteers deliver them, along with a printed prayer for strength and healing. Twice a month, volunteers with our Muffin Ministry box muffins and deliver them to families and individuals that are in special need of a tangible gift of love. If you are able to help with any of these outreaches to our members who hurt, contact Carol Toombs at the church office.
