Beacons
A Vital Link with Mature Adults
How often it has been stated, "The local church loses touch with its older members as they pass the torch of responsibility to younger members." In 1988 a group of concerned adults decided that this would not hap pen at First Presbyterian Church. On March 13 of that year "the Beacons" was organized. The goal of the Beacons is to enrich the lives of mature Christians by fellowship, education and service. By "mature adults" we mean those members who are 55 years and older. More than 150 members of the Church are active in this "vital organization." On the fourth Wednesday of each month a potluck supper is scheduled, featuring a program focused on the church, the community or world issues. Also included are programs of entertainment. Each month a "Birthday Bash" held to honor members who celebrate birthdays during the month. We lunch together at a different restaurant in the Metroplex and often tour a nearby site of interest. Transportation is available for those who desire it. Two or three times a year bus trips are planned to special events within the state and adjoining states. Beacons are active volunteers in Meals on Wheels, Habitat for Humanity, the Presbyterian Night Shelter and at Prairie Valley Camp and in many other church and community projects. If you are eligible, 55 years or older, you could benefit from the offerings of this active organization.
